Because He lives I can face tomorrow. Because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future. Life is worth the living just because He lives!

The Secret to a Long Life

Wouldn't we all love to live a long life? Wouldn't it be wonderful to experience thousands upon thousands of new days? Wouldn't it just be great to make it to the glorious old age of 100? And better yet, wouldn't it be great to be 100 and look as good as the Queen Mother?
See, my sister and I have it all figured out. The Englishmen. They hold the secret to long life. While many explorers have risked their lives and even died searching for the Fountain of Youth, and while Dr. Henry Jones suffered a bullet to his stomach trying to find the goblet that would give him eteral life, and while others have simply withered away at an age much to young, the Englishmen have quitely kept the secret to themselves.

Have you ever noticed that the English seem to have such long, full lives? Look at the Royal Family for example. The Queen Mother lived to be 102 years old! England's current queen, Queen Elizabeth II, is 84 and still rollin'. On the list of World's Oldest Persons England had 8 of the oldest people ages ranging from 113 to 115 years old!

And how, you ask, did they keep this secret for so long? Simple. Aren't things hardest to find when hidden it in plain sight. Yes, plain sight.
The secret, a two-fold secret, can be found in their every day routines. It can also be seen almost everywhere you look across the country.
Have you guessed? Then I shall tell.

Yes. Tea Time and Gardening.

For centuries Tea Time has been an English tradition. 5 o'clock every afternoon tea and scones are consumed throughout the country. From my research I have learned that while it seems like such an old tradition the Brits have kept tea time alive. Though life, even in England, can get crazy and hectic people still take the time to down a cup of tea. While in an American work place employees like to take a coffee break the Brits across the way take five for tea! Tea houses are as common in England as Starbucks is in the U.S.

So why exactly is tea partially the secret to long life? This very natural beverage is full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential to life. Polyphenol is a chemical found in the most common tea leaf, camellia sinensis. This chemical is what gives tea its antioxidant properties. Here is a list of all the health benefits of polyphenol:

  • Help prevent blood clotting
  • Help lower cholesterol levels
  • Help neutralize enzymes that aid in the growth of tumors
  • Help deactivate cancer promoters
  • Help stimulate the immune system
Other ingredients in tea including vitamins, minerals, and theanine (amino acids unique to tea) found in tea play an important role in good health. Here is another list of benefits:

  • Delay aging
  • Help fight high blood pressure
  • Help fight against viral and bacterial infection
  • Help improve the functions of the digestive and excretory systems
And as we all know tea is stress relieving and relaxing.

The second half of the “long life secret”, gardening, is just as beneficial to our health as drinking tea. Believe it or not gardening can be stimulating, refreshing, and a great calorie burner! Sandra Mason at Homeowner’s Column wrote a whole article on the health benefits of gardening. Here is an excerpt:

“Gardening provides the regular physical exercise listed in the prevention of heart disease, obesity, adult-onset diabetes and high blood pressure. It also provides the strength training important in the prevention of osteoporosis. Put a gallon sprinkling can full of water in each hand and you got your 8 pound dumbbells. Finish off with lifting a wheelbarrow and you got your bicep workout..”

Sandra goes on to explain that gardening not only helps your muscles but your brain as well…

“Gardening requires you to use your head and your creativity. The time spent planning the garden and researching different plants is a great brain workout.”

Here are some pictures of gardens that are absolutely gorgeous and obviously took lots of hard work and planning...

So, want to live spectacularly long life? Would you like to look as healthy and beautiful as the dear Queen Mother when you reach 102? Better get busy discovering your favorite teas and shopping for cute garden gloves.

Until next time,
Juliana.
